SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois
3 were saddened to learn of the death of Joseph M. Patterson of
4 Galesburg on May 2, 2004; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Mr. Patterson was born on September 8, 1924, in
6 McKeesport, Pennsylvania, to Lewis Whiting and Edna Nunimaker
7 Patterson; he married Elta Jeanne Lowe in 1945 in Galesburg;
8 she died in 1985, and he later married June E. "Bettie" Pierce
9 in 1987 in Galesburg; and
 
10     WHEREAS, He was a World War II Army Air Forces veteran,
11 serving with the Air Transport Command for 3 1/2 years in the
12 North Atlantic, Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East; and
 
13     WHEREAS, A 1949 graduate of Knox College, he did graduate
14 work at the University of Iowa, Western Illinois University,
15 and the University of Illinois; and
 
16     WHEREAS, Mr. Patterson taught at Lombard Junior High School
17 in Galesburg for 18 years and at Galesburg High School for 17
18 years, retiring in 1984; he also taught two years at Henry C.
19 Hill Correctional Center in Galesburg; and
 
20     WHEREAS, He supervised the Knox College library for one
21 year, taught home study students for three years, had been a
22 tutor for Heartland Literacy Coalition, and served as a trustee
23 of the Galesburg Public Library from 1986 to 1998; in addition,
24 he was a guest columnist for The (Galesburg) Register-Mail; and
 
25     WHEREAS, Mr. Patterson was active in the Prairie Players
26 Civic Theatre, where he served on the board for three years;
27 and
 
28     WHEREAS, The passing of Joseph Patterson will be deeply

1 felt by many, especially his wife, June "Bettie"; his son,
2 John; his daughters, Jo Anne Patterson and Janice (and Ron)
3 Rosenthal; his stepson, Michael (and Danita) Pierce; his
4 step-daughter, Deborah "Debi" (and Pete) Collier; his brother,
5 Douglas; his sister, Louise Patterson; his nine grandchildren;
6 three step-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; and
 
7     WHEREAS, He was preceded in death by one daughter, Judith
8 "Judy" Patterson-Stoddard; one son, James Patterson; and two
9 sisters; therefore, be it
 
10     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL
11 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the death of
12 Joseph Patterson along will all who knew and loved him and
13 extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends; and
14 be it further
 
15     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16 presented to the family of Joseph Patterson as an expression of
17 our deepest sympathy.
