SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois
3 learned with regret of the death of Godwin Sunday Daniel
4 Okorafor, M.D., F.A.C.S., on Sunday, March 14, 2004; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Dr. Okorafor was born on December 8, 1940; he
6 married Dr. Helen I. Okorafor, H.S.D.; and
 
7     WHEREAS, Dr. Okorafor attended Christ the King College in
8 Onitsha, Nigeria for his premedical education; he received his
9 medical doctorate in 1968 from the University of Ibadan in
10 Ibadan, Nigeria; he served his rotating internship at
11 University College Hospital in Ibadan, Nigeria and at St.
12 Joseph Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland; his general surgery
13 residency was conducted at Springfield Hospital Medical Center
14 in Springfield, Massachusetts and at The Christ Hospital in
15 Cincinnati, Ohio, where he served as chief resident of general
16 surgery; his thoracic-cardiovascular surgery residency was
17 completed at The Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana,
18 where he served as thoracic-cardiovascular chief resident; and
 
19     WHEREAS, Dr. Okorafor was a highly respected and
20 accomplished thoracic-cardiovascular surgeon and had dedicated
21 25 years of his life to serving the south side communities of
22 Chicago; he was the Chief of Surgery for several years at St.
23 Bernard Hospital and was very active at Trinity, Mount Sinai,
24 South Shore, Provident, Inglewood, Doctors Hospital of Hyde
25 Park, and Jackson Park Hospitals; and
 
26     WHEREAS, Dr. Okorafor was a member of several professional
27 organizations, including the American Medical Association, the
28 Illinois State Medical Society, and the Chicago Medical
29 Society, and he was a fellow of the American College of
30 Surgeons; and

1     WHEREAS, Dr. Okorafor was a devoted family man; he enjoyed
2 tennis, table tennis, soccer, swimming, and boating; and
 
3     WHEREAS, The passing of Godwin Sunday Daniel Okorafor,
4 M.D., F.A.C.S. has been deeply felt by many, especially his
5 wife, Dr. Helen I. Okorafor, H.S.D.; his children, Dr. Ifeoma
6 Chinyere Okorafor-Chidume, D.C. Ngozi Chigioke Okorafor-Johns,
7 M.A., J.D., Esq., Nnedi Nkemdili Okorafor-Mbachu, writer and
8 Ph.D. candidate, and Emezie Ijoma Okorafor, B.Sc., Eng. MIT;
9 and his grandchildren, Anyaugo Obioma Mbachu and Onyuedika
10 Chukwudi Sunday Chidume; therefore, be it
 
11     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL
12 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
13 Godwin Sunday Daniel Okorafor, M.D., F.A.C.S., and we extend
14 our deepest sympathy to his family, friends, and all who knew
15 and loved him; and be it further
 
16     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
17 presented to the family of Dr. Okorafor as an expression of our
18 sincere condolences.
