SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois
3 learned with regret of the death of Steve Neal on Wednesday,
4 February 18, 2004; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Mr. Neal was born in Coos Bay, Oregon, to Ernest
6 and Ellen Neal; he graduated from the University of Oregon in
7 1971 and received a master's degree from Columbia University in
8 New York; and
 
9     WHEREAS, Mr. Neal began his journalism career at the Oregon
10 Journal in 1971 and moved a year later to the Philadelphia
11 Inquirer, where he worked until joining the Chicago Tribune in
12 1979; he was a Washington-based correspondent for the Tribune
13 for two years, then the paper's White House correspondent from
14 1981 to 1983; in 1984 he was named political writer for the
15 Tribune; in 1987 he moved to the Sun-Times, where he was a
16 political columnist; and
 
17     WHEREAS, Mr. Neal authored and co-authored several books,
18 including a biography on Wendell Willkie and historical
19 perspectives on Harry S. Truman and Truman's relationship with
20 his successor, Dwight D. Eisenhower; last fall, he published
21 two books, "HST: Memories of the Truman Years" and "Miracle of
22 '48: Harry Truman's Major Campaign Speeches and Selected
23 Whistle-stops"; in a book published a year earlier, Mr. Neal
24 edited a collection of correspondence between Eleanor
25 Roosevelt and Truman that he discovered while researching an
26 earlier book; in 1999 Southern Illinois University Press issued
27 a collection of 97 of his columns called "Rolling on the
28 River"; his latest book, "Happy Days are Here Again" was about
29 to be published; and
 
30     WHEREAS, Mr. Neal was a sports fan, an Elvis fan, and loved
31 history; his political knowledge was unrivaled; he was known to

1 be one of the hardest working journalists in the Chicago
2 political scene in the past two decades and was renowned for
3 his institutional knowledge and strong sense of history; and
 
4     WHEREAS, The passing of Mr. Neal has been deeply felt by
5 many, especially his wife, Susan; his daughters, Erin and
6 Shannon; his parents, Ernest and Ellen Neal; his brothers, Dan
7 and Gary Neal; and his in-laws, Bland and Beverly Simmons;
8 therefore, be it
 
9     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL
10 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
11 Steve Neal, one of the most outstanding political journalists
12 of his time, and we extend our deepest sympathy to his friends,
13 family, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further
 
14     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
15 presented to the family of Steve Neal as an expression of our
16 sincere condolences.
