SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois
3 learned with regret of the death of Hester Clarise Clarkston
4 Estelle on January 25, 2004; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Mrs. Estelle was born on July 19, 1917, in Chicago
6 to Lyda Mae Clarkston and Lucas Chauncey Clarkston; she
7 graduated from James McCosh Elementary School and received a
8 diploma in General Science from Englewood High School; she was
9 awarded an associate's degree in early childhood development
10 from Kennedy King College and a Bachelor of Arts degree in
11 education from Roosevelt University; she met Charles F. Estelle
12 Sr. while they were both members of the Young Peoples Choir at
13 Woodlawn African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church, and they
14 were married on June 11, 1938; and
 
15     WHEREAS, Mrs. Estelle's faith in God was a major part of
16 her life; she had been a member of St. Mark United Methodist
17 Church since 1978, where she participated in the Clair Young
18 Circle of the United Methodist Women, the Chancel Choir, and
19 served on various program committees; she especially enjoyed
20 singing in Handel's Messiah with the Chancel Choir; she was an
21 original member of the Young Peoples Choir, now called the
22 Aeolian Chorale at Woodlawn Church; she was a Sunday School
23 Superintendent at St. John A.M.E. Church; and
 
24     WHEREAS, Mrs. Estelle was actively involved in her
25 community; she was Chairman of the Advisory Council of the
26 Englewood Urban Progress Center, now called the Department of
27 Human Services (DHS) Englewood office, and was a member of the
28 Ogden Park Advisory Council, the National Association of
29 University Women, the Chicago Committee on Urban Opportunity,
30 and the 65th and Carpenter Block Club; she was a Precinct
31 Election Official for the Circuit Court of Cook County, PTA
32 President of the Perkins and Bass Elementary Schools, and she

1 was appointed by the late Mayor Richard J. Daly to his Citizens
2 Advisory Committee; and
 
3     WHEREAS, Mrs. Estelle was employed for 22 years with the
4 City of Chicago DHS Head Start Program; she organized Head
5 Start Centers, developed workshops, and supervised and trained
6 workers; she founded one of Chicago's first Head Start Centers
7 at St. John A.M.E. Church; she retired in 1987 from the
8 Salvation Army's Brainerd Head Start Center, where she was
9 Acting Director; and
 
10     WHEREAS, The passing of Hester Clarice Clarkston Estelle
11 has been deeply felt by many, especially her daughter, Elaine
12 Williams; her sons, Charles F. Estelle Jr. and Anthony E.
13 Estelle; her son-in-law, Samuel J. Williams Sr.; her
14 grandchildren, Camille A. Simmons (Victor Sr.), Denise T.
15 Nicholes (Walter), Samuel J. Williams Jr., Carrie Estelle,
16 Matthew Estelle, Lucas Estelle, Camel Bates Jr., and Anthony
17 Bates; her great-grandchildren, April Henderson, Ashley
18 Simmons, Victor T. Simmons Jr., Taylor Nicholes, Erika
19 Nicholes, O'Shay Bates, and Latham Estelle; her sisters,
20 Cecelia M. Guice and Muriel J. Clarkston; her sisters-in-law,
21 Grace Estelle and Emmerine Clarkston; her brother-in-law,
22 Jewel Armstrong; and her many nieces, nephews, and friends; she
23 was preceded in death by her husband, Charles F. Estelle Sr.
24 and her beloved daughter, Frances Bates; therefore, be it
 
25     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL
26 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
27 Hester Clarise Clarkston Estelle, and we extend our deepest
28 sympathy to her friends, family, and all who knew and loved
29 her; and be it further
 
30     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
31 presented to the family of Mrs. Estelle as an expression of our
32 deepest sympathy.
