HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish to congratulate Darlene M. Shannon on her retirement after 34 years of teaching and advising students at Steeleville Community Unit Schools; and

WHEREAS, As a farm girl in Hamilton County, Darlene Marie (Karcher) Shannon attended grade school at Piopolis and McLeansboro; and

WHEREAS, In 1966, she graduated from McLeansboro High School and enrolled at Southern Illinois University Carbondale; in 1970, she received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Education and was employed by Steeleville Community Unit Schools; while teaching, she earned her Master's Degree in Business Education in 1975 from SIU Carbondale; and

WHEREAS, For Steeleville Community Unit Schools, she taught keyboarding to high school and grade school students, Business English, Accounting I and II, clerical practice, salesmanship, shorthand, information processing, and record keeping; she also taught adult education keyboarding at John A. Logan and a Business English class for SIU Carbondale; and

WHEREAS, Along with teaching at Steeleville, Mrs. Shannon was an adviser for the following: Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), Pep Club, the Student Activity Board, the Student Athletic Council, yearbook staff, and classes; while yearbook adviser, the staff received the Golden Dozen Award from the Southern Illinois School Press Association 9 years; she has served as the adviser to 33 Southern Area FBLA officers, 11 Illinois FBLA State officers, and many area, state, and national competitive event winners from Steeleville; and

WHEREAS, In addition being an FBLA chapter adviser for 34 years, Mrs. Shannon served as the Illinois FBLA State Adviser for 16 years and on the National FBLA-PBL Board of Directors for 3 years; she is continuing to serve as the Illinois FBLA-PBL State Chairman, a position that she has held for 4 years; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Shannon's recognitions include the Mary E. Webb Award for Outstanding Illinois FBLA Advisers, National outstanding Local FBLA Adviser Award, southern Illinois Business Teacher of the Year, Those Who Excel Classroom Teacher Award of Merit, and Southern Illinois School Press Association Adviser of the Year; and

WHEREAS, In 1971, she married Dan Shannon from Cisne, whom she met as a student worker at Textbook Service at SIUC; Mr. Shannon retired after 35 years of employment at SIUC where his job duties included research, service, and teaching; he is presently working part time with the SIU Center for Rural Health and the Safety Center; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Shannon will be retiring at the end of the 2003-04 school year; she feels blessed to have had such a wonderful school district and community in which to spend her teaching career; and; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Darlene M. Shannon on her retirement after many years of dedication to the cause of education, and we wish her good health and happiness in all her future endeavors; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Darlene M. Shannon as an expression of our respect and esteem.
