HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the State of Illinois are pleased to recognize citizens of the State who have accomplished much; and

WHEREAS, George Henry Stanton Jr. was the second child born to Veola (married Ross Dreher) and George H. Stanton; he attended Gillespie Elementary and Calumet High School, and graduated from Harlan High School; he received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Chicago Teachers College and a Master of Education degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Stanton taught physical education for many years at several locations, including Whitney Young Magnet High, Metcalfe Magnet Elementary, John Hope Middle, Mt. Vernon Elementary, and Altgeld Elementary; he currently serves as a sports administrator for the Chicago Public Schools; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Stanton coached at several schools; at Whitney Young, his career record was 236 wins and 90 losses; in 1998, his team had a record of 30 wins and one loss, was the State champion, and was ranked number two in the nation; in 1997, his team had a record of 30 wins and 2 losses, was the city champion, and was ranked number eight in the nation; in 1996, 1994, 1993, 1991, and 1989, the team was a city quarterfinalist; when he coached freshmen and sophomores at Simeon High, his career record was 181 wins and 21 losses; in 1987, 1986, and 1985, his Simeon team was city champion and in 1984 and 1982, it was city champion runner-up; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Stanton has received many awards during his coaching/teaching career; in 1999, he was inducted into the Chicago Public League Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame; in 1998, he was named Illinois Basketball Coaches Association State Coach of the Year, and in 1997, he was named District Coach of the Year by the same organization; in 1987, he was the Kate Maremont Dedicated Teacher of the Year; the Chicago Public League Basketball Coaches Association chose him as Coach of the Year for 1998, 1997, 1987, 1986, and 1985; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Stanton is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, the Chicago Area Alliance of Black School Administrators, the Chicago Public League Basketball Coaches Association, and the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate George Henry Stanton Jr. on the many accomplishments he has achieved; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Mr. Stanton as an expression of our respect and esteem.
