 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS, The Central Christian Church in Mt.  Vernon  was
 3    organized   on   October  3,  1853  and  is  celebrating  its
 4    sesquicentennial anniversary; and

 5        WHEREAS,  The  congregation  struggled  for   21   years,
 6    disbanded  for  12  years, and used a house of worship for 26
 7    years;  the  church  is  a  nondenominational  fellowship  of
 8    believers in Jesus Christ who have no creeds but  Christ,  no
 9    book but the Bible and no name but Christian; and

10        WHEREAS,  By  1915,  the  congregation was outgrowing its
11    building so they built a new structure  at  Tenth  and  North
12    Street  in  Mt.  Vernon; this structure was dedicated in 1916
13    and is still in use  today  for  classrooms,  chapel,  prayer
14    room, and Counseling Center; and

15        WHEREAS,  In  early  1950,  it  was  decided  that  a new
16    auditorium was needed and in 1956 the new worship  auditorium
17    was built; and

18        WHEREAS,  As  time progressed and the church continued to
19    disciple followers for Jesus, it found itself in need of more
20    space; it was also decided that a Family Life Activity Center
21    would be helpful to the growth of the church;  so  the  plans
22    were  made  and  construction  began;  on April 14, 1991, the
23    building was dedicated to the Lord's Service; and

24        WHEREAS, The Central Christian  Church  has  reached  its
25    150th  anniversary with a vision for the future and a goal of
26    being faithful to God's will;  the  church's  attendance  has
27    grown to 950 to 1000 in worship; therefore, be it

28        RESOLVED,   BY   THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES  OF  THE
29    NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS,  that
30    we  recognize the Central Christian Church on the occasion of
31    its sesquicentennial anniversary of service to  the  citizens

 1    of Mt. Vernon; and be it further

 2        RESOLVED,  That  a  suitable  copy  of this resolution be
 3    presented  to  Jamie  Allen,  Preaching   Minister,   as   an
 4    expression of our respect and esteem.
