 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS,  The  members   of   the   Illinois   House   of
 3    Representatives were saddened to learn of the death of Eunice
 4    Lee House Alexander on Sunday, August 10, 2003; and

 5        WHEREAS,  Mrs.  Alexander  was  born  on  May 11, 1925 in
 6    Clarksdale, Mississippi; she was the only child of  the  late
 7    Corinne and Steve House; and

 8        WHEREAS,  Mrs.  Alexander  married  Horace Howard and two
 9    children were born to this union, Corinne  "Betty"  Elizabeth
10    and  Barbara  Jean; she later was divorced and married Lester
11    Hunt in 1946 and to this union a son, Robert Steve, was born;
12    and she married Henry V. Alexander in 1961; and

13        WHEREAS,  Mrs.  Alexander  graduated  from  Myrtle   Hall
14    Elementary  School in Clarksdale and came to Chicago with her
15    parents in 1938; she graduated from DuSable  High  School  in
16    Chicago  and  Cortez W. Peters Business College and earned an
17    Associate's Degree from  Kennedy-King  College;  she  held  a
18    variety  of  jobs, including Friendly Loan Co., Spiegels, the
19    United  States  Treasury  Department,   the   United   States
20    Department  of  Health, Education and Welfare before retiring
21    from the United States Department of Agriculture in 1984; and

22        WHEREAS, In addition, she worked in the  family  business
23    at  House  Brothers  Food  Mart  in  the early 1940s with her
24    parents and other relatives;  and

25        WHEREAS, Mrs. Alexander believed in helping her community
26    and she worked for many years as a volunteer with  the  Urban
27    League and at Operation PUSH with her daughter Betty; and

28        WHEREAS,  Mrs.  Alexander  was a member of Grant Memorial
29    A.M.E. Church for 65 years, where she served as a missionary,
30    stewardess, and class leader; she remained active  in  church
31    until the onset of illness and she spent her last three years

 1    at St. Agnes Healthcare Center; and

 2        WHEREAS,  Mrs.  Alexander  loved to enjoy herself and she
 3    loved to be with her family; she was an avid  bowler,  and  a
 4    very good one, who at one time bowled five days a week in six
 5    leagues  and  often  traveled  to  other  cities  for bowling
 6    tournaments; she also enjoyed gatherings with her cousins, at
 7    card parties and other family functions; and

 8        WHEREAS, Eunice Lee House  Alexander's  passing  will  be
 9    deeply  felt  by  many, especially her two daughters, Corinne
10    Elizabeth "Betty" Magness  and  Barbara  Whittmon;  her  son,
11    Robert  (CeCi)  Steve Hunt; her eight grandchildren, Reverend
12    Tony Land, Andre Whittmon, Jacqui (Sidney Turner) Michael  V.
13    Magness,   Whittmon,   Antione   Whittmon,   Angel  Marquitta
14    Whittmon, Eric Jabar  Hunt,  and  Chaaz  Hunt;  her  fourteen
15    great-grandchildren; her godson, Lawrence Baker; and numerous
16    nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; therefore, be it

17        RESOLVED,   BY   THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES  OF  THE
18    NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS,  that
19    we mourn the passing of Eunice Lee House Alexander along with
20    all who knew and loved her and extend our sincere condolences
21    to her family and friends; and be it further

22        RESOLVED,  That  a  suitable  copy  of this resolution be
23    presented to the family of Eunice Lee House Alexander  as  an
24    expression of our deepest sympathy.
