 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS, The members of the House of  Representatives  of
 3    the  State of Illinois were saddened to learn of the death of
 4    Julius Samuel "J.S." Cousin Sr. on Monday, January  6,  2003;
 5    and

 6        WHEREAS,  Julius  Cousin  was  born September 15, 1929 in
 7    Franklington, Louisiana to Paul and Carolyn Cousin, the older
 8    of two children; his parents and his brother, Major, preceded
 9    him in death; and

10        WHEREAS, Mr. Cousin  was  the  first  in  his  family  to
11    graduate  from  high  school;  he  moved  to Chicago where he
12    became  a  professional   chef   before   he   nurtured   his
13    entrepreneurial  spirit  by  developing and operating several
14    small businesses; he retired from the Salvation Army in  1990
15    and  turned  his  energy  to  full time community service and
16    volunteer work; and

17        WHEREAS, Mr. Cousin moved to Chicago's West Side  in  the
18    early  1960s;  he  strongly  believed in the grand vision for
19    redevelopment of the  Lawndale  community  and  served  as  a
20    founding   member   and   director   of   several   community
21    organizations,  including  Pyramid  West  and  the Lawndale's
22    People's Planning and Action Committee; and

23        WHEREAS, At a young age, Julius  Cousin  was  a  faithful
24    member of of Hazel Creek Baptist Church until he relocated to
25    Chicago;  in  1960,  he  joined Presentation Catholic Church,
26    where his children attended school and he served in  numerous
27    capacities,  including membership in Knights of Peter Clavier
28    and serving as an Executive Member  of  the  Men's  Club;  he
29    enjoyed  serving the church by cooking at the monthly pancake
30    breakfasts and ribs at the summertime barbecues; and

31        WHEREAS, Nothing was more important to  Mr.  Cousin  than

 1    his  family;  he  shared his life with his cherished wife and
 2    partner, Annie; he loved all of his  children  and  expressed
 3    the greatest joy at being a grandparent; and

 4        WHEREAS,  The  loss  of Mr. Cousin will be deeply felt by
 5    many, especially his wife, Annie; his children, Paul, Sheryl,
 6    Julius  (Jan),  Constance,  Wanda  (Jody),   Ertarin,   Tybra
 7    (Maurice),  Yuvette,  and  Zina  (Warren);  his  special son,
 8    Henry; his 20 grandchildren; his 9  great-grandchildren;  his
 9    nephew;  and  a  wealth  of additional relatives and friends;
10    therefore, be it

11        RESOLVED,  BY  THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES   OF   THE
12    NINETY-THIRD  GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
13    we mourn the passing of Julius Samuel Cousin Sr.,  and  offer
14    our  deepest  sympathy  to  his family and friends; and be it
15    further

16        RESOLVED, That a suitable  copy  of  this  resolution  be
17    presented  to the family of Julius Samuel Cousin Sr. with our
18    sincerest condolences.
