 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS, On March 28,  1980,  Wisconsin  Steel  in  South
 3    Chicago  was  suddenly  closed,  leaving over 3,000 employees
 4    jobless and without their contracted benefits; and

 5        WHEREAS, The Wisconsin Steelworkers formed the  Save  Our
 6    Jobs  Committee  led  by  Frank Lumpkin to explore efforts to
 7    reopen the mill and win payment of their benefits; and

 8        WHEREAS, The Save Our  Jobs  Committee  finally  won  $19
 9    million  in  court  settlements  after  a 16 year effort that
10    included  attending  committee  hearings  of   the   Illinois
11    Legislature  in  Springfield,  an  hour  on the agenda of the
12    House of Representatives in Washington, D.C.,  meetings  with
13    Mayor  Harold  Washington's  Task  Forces on Steel, Displaced
14    Workers,  and  Hunger,  and  numerous  sessions  of   several
15    different courts; and

16        WHEREAS,  The  former  Wisconsin Steelworkers have joined
17    with other steelworker retirees and other  retirees  to  form
18    Seniors  Organized  for Justice, affiliated with the Illinois
19    Alliance for Retired Americans, and are now actively pursuing
20    a better healthcare system that provides  prescription  drugs
21    under Medicare and includes healthcare for all; therefore, be
22    it

23        RESOLVED,   BY   THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES  OF  THE
24    NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS,  that
25    we  congratulate  these  fighting  senior  citizens for their
26    determination to never give up the fight for justice and  for
27    their  public-minded  spirit and applaud them on the occasion
28    of their 23rd Steelworker Dinner and  Reunion  on  March  27,
29    2003  at  the  Steelworkers  Union Hall at 9350 South Chicago
30    Avenue; and be it further

31        RESOLVED, That a suitable  copy  of  this  resolution  be
