HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the State of Illinois learned with great sadness of the death of Naomi Grant on August 3, 2004; and

WHEREAS, Naomi Grant was born on December 2, 1911, in Grenada, Mississippi; she was the eleventh of fifteen children born to the union of Thomas and Mender Moore; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Grant came to Chicago in her youth and was educated in the Chicago Public Schools and graduated from Wendell Phillips High School in 1930; she married Henry Grant in 1932 and they had four sons, Henry Jr., Raymond, Donald, and Jamus; and

WHEREAS, She was employed by the historic South Center/Fuller Department Store; while at South Center, she was an active member of the AFL-CIO Labor Union and was outspoken against wage and discrimination issues; she later was employed at Evans Furriers, where she earned recognition for "Outstanding Salesperson" for more than ten consecutive years; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Grant was an active member of the Grant Memorial AME Church, where she served on a number of auxiliaries, and was a Bible class leader and a matron; and

WHEREAS, The passing of Naomi Grant will be deeply felt by many including her devoted sons, Henry Jr. (Jean), Raymond (Lynn), and Jamus Grant; her "play daughter", Ethel Lawrence; her special friend, William Fuller; her 15 grandchildren; her 30 great-grandchildren; her 10 great-great-grandchildren; her 10 first generation nieces and nephews; and a host of relatives and friends; and

WHEREAS, She was preceded in death by her parents, and all of her siblings; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Naomi Grant along with all who knew and loved her and extend our sincere condolences to her family and friends; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Naomi Grant as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
