HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Vivian C. Smith of Chicago on July 22, 2004; and

WHEREAS, Vivian Colbert Smith was born in Longview, Texas on April 23, 1918; and

WHEREAS, Vivian Smith was a retired employee of the federal government, and was actively involved in retiree's rights through the National Association of Retired Federal Employees Chicago Chapter 6; and

WHEREAS, She was involved in court advocacy and in supporting political candidates that she believed in; she was involved with her community through her work with the Neighbors of Fuller Park and the 9th Police District in Chicago; and

WHEREAS, Vivian Smith was an expert seamstress, a wonderful mother, and a very strong matriarch for her entire family; and

WHEREAS, The passing of Vivian C. Smith will be deeply felt by many, especially her son, Kenneth Smith, Jr.; her nieces and nephews, Diane (Samuels) Brooks, Barbara Samuels, Gregory Samuels, Sr., and Dwight Samuels; her many grandnieces and grandnephews; and her many dear friends; and

WHEREAS, She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Bertha (Fowler) Colbert; her sister, Bernice (Colbert) Samuels; and her nephew, William H. Samuels; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the death of Vivian C. Smith along with all who knew and loved her and extend our sincere condolences to her family and friends; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Vivian C. Smith as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
