HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the State of Illinois learned with regret of the death of Richard A. Brauer of Belleville on Tuesday, May 25, 2004; and

WHEREAS, Richard A. Brauer was born on August 28, 1928, in Belleville to George and Lillian, nee Felts, Brauer; he graduated from Belleville Township High School in 1945 and attended St. Louis University; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Brauer valiantly served his country in the U.S. Army as a combat engineer in the Korean War; he married Dorothy "Dottie", nee Rose, on July 6, 1968; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Brauer worked in the plastering business for several years and also at Monsanto in Sauget; in 1973, his mentor, Belleville Mayor Charles Nichols, asked him to run for city clerk on his ticket; he served as city clerk from 1973 until 1979, when he was elected mayor to finish the term of Mayor Nichols; he proudly served as mayor of Belleville until 1993; in his retirement, he served as both commissioner and treasurer of the Public Building Commission of St. Clair County; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Brauer loved spending the winter months in Orange Beach, Alabama, at the family condo, where he was treasurer of the condo association; he was also a past president of the Missouri Snowbirds Club, Gulf Shores, Alabama; he loved his family, his city, his country, and his many friends; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Brauer was co-founder and chairman emeritus of Belleville Sister Cities, Inc.; a life member, past governor and pilgrim of Belleville-Swansea Moose Lodge 1221; a member of American Legion Belleville Post 58; and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars; he was active in St. Clair Masonic Lodge 24, AF&AM, for 49 years; he was also a member of the Knight Temple, the Royal Arch Masons of Illinois, and the Ainad Temple Shriners; other memberships included the Korean War Veterans Association, IMJIN chapter, the board of the 14th Engineer Combat Battalion Association, the Plasterers Union, the Eagles, South Side Improvement Association, the Historical Society of St. Clair County, and the Genealogical Societies of St. Louis and St. Clair County; and

WHEREAS, The passing of Richard A. Brauer has been deeply felt by many, especially his wife, Dorothy "Dottie"; his brothers and sisters, Kenneth (Jean) Brauer, Betty (Marshall) Hartman, Marilyn (Don) Ackerman, Bill (Betty) Brauer, and Barbara (Bill) Meier; his foster brother, Don (Sue) Frazier; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Audrey Brauer, Carol Brauer, Tom (Ruth) Rose, Jeanne (Jim) Koechling, Theresa (Gene) Boyet, Marcella Rose, Richard (Shirley) Rose, Betty Rose, and Carol Rose; and his many nieces and nephews; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Richard A. Brauer, and we extend our deepest sympathy to his family, friends, community, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Richard A. Brauer as an expression of our sincere condolences.
