 1        AN ACT in relation to vehicles.

 2        Be it enacted by the People of  the  State  of  Illinois,
 3    represented in the General Assembly:

 4        Section  5.  The  Illinois  Vehicle  Code  is  amended by
 5    adding Section 11-503.1 as follows:

 6        (625 ILCS 5/11-503.1 new)
 7        Sec. 11-503.1.  Negligent driving.
 8        (a)  A person commits negligent driving when  he  or  she
 9    operates a motor vehicle carelessly or without exercising due
10    care  for  the safety of others or in a manner that endangers
11    any  property  or  any  person,  including  the   driver   or
12    passengers of the vehicle.
13        (b)  If  a violation of this Section results in damage to
14    property, in addition  to  any  other  penalty  imposed,  the
15    person's  driving  privileges  shall be suspended for a fixed
16    period of not less than 90 days and not more than one year.
17        (c)  If a violation of this Section results in injury  to
18    any  person,  in  addition  to any other penalty imposed, the
19    person's driving privileges shall be suspended  for  a  fixed
20    period of not less than 180 days and not more than 2 years.
21        (d)  If  a violation of this Section results in the death
22    of another person, in addition to any other penalty  imposed,
23    the  person's  driving  privileges  shall  be suspended for 2
24    years.
25        (e)  The Secretary of State, upon receiving a record of a
26    judgment entered against a person under this Section, shall:
27             (1)  suspend the person's driving privileges for the
28        mandatory period; or
29             (2)  extend the period of an existing suspension  by
30        the appropriate mandatory period.
