HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that domestic violence or intimate partner violence is a serious public health issue for millions of individuals in the United States; nearly one in four women and one in nine men in the United States have suffered sexual violence, physical violence, or stalking by an intimate partner; and

WHEREAS, Transgender and gender non-conforming people face extraordinary levels of physical and sexual violence; over one in four transgender people have faced bias-driven assault; this rate is higher for trans women and trans people of color; and

WHEREAS, In 2014, approximately 65,800 intimate violence incidents were reported to Illinois law enforcement; many others went unreported; in between July 2013 and June 2014, there were 84 domestic violence-related deaths in Illinois, including 15 children; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we urge the U.S. Congress to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act; and be it further

RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be delivered to the President of the United States, the U.S. Senate Majority Leader, the U.S. Senate Minority Leader, the U.S. Speaker of the House, the U.S. House of Representatives Minority Leader, and all members of the Illinois Congressional Delegation.
