HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate the Aurora Area Branch of
4the American Association of University Women (AAUW) on the
5occasion of their 100th anniversary; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Founded in 1881, the AAUW is the nation's most
7active and diverse organization for college graduates; it is
8the oldest and largest national organization working for
9equality and the advancement of women through education; and
 
10    WHEREAS, The AAUW works to address the barriers and
11implicit biases in education that hinder the advancement of
12women, to ensure livelihoods for women by creating inclusive
13career pathways to attain economic security, and to close the
14gender gap in leadership opportunities by cultivating women
15leaders; and
 
16    WHEREAS, The Aurora Area Branch was founded in 1919 and has
17approximately 60 members; among their achievements is the
18effort to elect women to local offices, beginning in the 1950s
19when Elaine Hegy, the former branch president, was the first
20woman elected to the local school board; many of the Branch's
21members have run for public office, including State Senator
22Linda Homes, State Representative Stephanie Kifowit, former

1State Representative Linda Chapa-LaVia, and former State
2Representative Suzanne Deuchler; and
 
3    WHEREAS, The Aurora Area Branch's other achievements
4include being selected as a finalist for AAUW's Breaking
5Through Barriers Award for its "Science Spooktacular" program
6for girls in 2011 and being the home branch of Andi Danis, the
72013-2014 Illinois State President; and
 
8    WHEREAS, A graduate with an associate's degree or the
9equivalent, a baccalaureate, or a higher degree from a
10qualified educational institution is eligible to join the AAUW;
11members of the Aurora Area Branch join 100,000 members
12nationwide with a long-standing commitment to advocacy for
13women; therefore, be it
 
14    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
15HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
16we congratulate the Aurora Branch of AAUW on the occasion of
17their 100th anniversary and commend them for examining and
18taking positions on the fundamental issues of the day and on
19promoting equity and education for women and girls; and be it
20further
 
21    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
22presented to the Aurora Branch of AAUW as an expression of our
