Synopsis As Introduced
Amends the School Code. In a Section concerning an Internet safety education curriculum, provides that beginning with the 2009-2010 school year, a school district must incorporate into the school curriculum a component on Internet safety to be taught at least once each school year to students in grade 3 or above. Requires the State Board of Education to develop a model curriculum for educating children regarding child online safety. Requires the State Board of Education to provide to each school district educational materials for parents regarding child online safety.

Senate Committee Amendment No. 1
Deletes everything after the enacting clause. Reinserts the contents of the bill with the following changes. Requires the State Board of Education to make available resource materials (instead of requiring the State Board to develop a model curriculum); makes related changes. Requires the State Board to make these resource materials available on its Internet website (instead of requiring the State Board to provide to each school district educational materials for parents regarding child online safety).

House Floor Amendment No. 1
Deletes everything after the enacting clause. Reinserts the contents of the bill as engrossed, with the following changes. Removes the provision that provides that it is recommended that the age-appropriate curriculum for Internet safety instruction provide for a minimum of 2 hours of Internet safety education each school year. Instead, provides that the school board shall determine the scope and duration of this unit of instruction. Allows the age-appropriate unit of instruction to be incorporated into the current courses of study regularly taught in the district's schools, as determined by the school board.
