SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Helen Jean Sloan McClain of Woodstock,
4who passed away on May 16, 2015; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Helen McClain was born in Spearfish, South Dakota
6on August 28, 1926 to Harold Dewitt and Pamelia Arbuckle Sloan;
7she was raised on the homestead ranch her father started 40
8miles northwest of Belle Fourche, South Dakota that included
9the corner stone of South Dakota, Wyoming, and Montana; she was
10valedictorian of her high school class and graduated from the
11University of Nebraska, where she studied chemistry and
12bacteriology; she married Arthur "Art" Wayne McClain in
13Lincoln, Nebraska on November 26, 1947; and
 
14    WHEREAS, After graduation in 1948, Helen McClain moved to
15Chicago; she worked in the laboratories at DuPont and Loyola
16Medical School; she stopped working in 1949 to raise her
17family; she and her family moved to Woodstock in 1957; in 1975,
18she returned to work at the McClain Corporation where she held
19the position of Business Manager (aka "Supreme Commander"),
20retiring in 1990; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Helen McClain loved golf and won several women's
22championships at the Woodstock Country Club, where she and Art

1were members for over 50 years; she was also a member of
2several Bridge clubs, playing until recently; her travels
3included Europe, Scotland, Australia, Japan, Canada, Mexico,
4and nearly every state; she was a member of several book clubs
5and was a founding member of the first women's investment club
6in Woodstock, at a time when such things were not common; she
7was a member of Grace Lutheran Church of Woodstock for over 50
8years; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Helen McClain was preceded in death by her
10husband, Art; her parents; and her siblings, Harold, Jr.,
11George, and infant, Rose Marie; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Helen McClain is survived by her 3 children, Kelly
13(Peggy) McClain, Margaret McClain, and Scott (Renee) McClain;
14her grandchildren, Tony (Tammi) Halda, Christy (Steve) Sturm,
15Andrew (Crystal) McClain, Rhienna (Edward) Trevino, Conner
16McClain, and Abbey McClain; her great-grandchildren, Joseph,
17Jade, Maggie, Steven, Henry, William, Ella, Chelsea, Elyse, and
18Emmit; and many nieces and nephews; therefore, be it
 
19    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL
20ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
21Helen Jean Sloan McClain, and extend our sincere condolences to
22her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it

3our deepest sympathy.
