HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Drug overdose is an epidemic affecting thousands
3of persons and families in the State of Illinois; and
 
4    WHEREAS, More than 1 out of every 10,000 people in Illinois
5died last year due to drug overdoses; and
 
6    WHEREAS, According to the Center for Disease Control, in
72013, there were 43,982 drug overdoses, which amounts to 120
8deaths per day; and
 
9    WHEREAS, In the United States, drug overdose has become the
10leading cause of injury death, now surpassing motor vehicle
11accident deaths; and
 
12    WHEREAS, During a study in 2011, the Drug Abuse Warning
13Network found that drug misuse and abuse caused about 2.5
14million emergency department visits; and
 
15    WHEREAS, The State of Illinois has the 12th lowest drug
16overdose mortality rate in the United States; and
 
17    WHEREAS, The State of Illinois is committed to the
18recognition, care, and treatment of those with substance abuse
19problems; and

1    WHEREAS, International Drug Awareness Day is August 31; the
2day is aimed to raise awareness of overdose and reduce the
3steady increase of drug-related deaths; and
 
4    WHEREAS, The State of Illinois encourages efforts to
5promote understanding and awareness of drug overdoses and other
6substance abuse problems; therefore, be it
 
7    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
8NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
9congratulate all Illinoisans who are participating in
10International Drug Awareness Day recognition and advocacy
11events in August and throughout the year; and be it further
 
12    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
13presented to the organizers of the 1st Annual Drug Overdose
14Awareness Walk in Canton.
