SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
50 ILCS 705/10.17 new

    Amends the Illinois Police Training Act. Provides that the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board shall create a standard curriculum for a certified training program in crisis intervention addressing specialized policing responses to people with mental illnesses. Further provides that officers who have successfully completed this program shall be issued a certificate attesting to their attendance of a Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training program.

1    AN ACT concerning local government.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The Illinois Police Training Act is amended by
5adding Section 10.17 as follows:
 
6    (50 ILCS 705/10.17 new)
7    Sec. 10.17. Crisis intervention team training. The
8Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board shall
9develop and approve a standard curriculum for a certified
10training program in crisis intervention addressing specialized
11policing responses to people with mental illnesses. The Board
12shall conduct Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training programs
13that train officers to identify signs and symptoms of mental
14illness, to de-escalate situations involving individuals who
15appear to have a mental illness, and connect that person in
16crisis to treatment. Officers who have successfully completed
17this program shall be issued a certificate attesting to their
18attendance of a Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training
19program.
