SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
415 ILCS 20/6a  from Ch. 111 1/2, par. 7056a

    Amends the Illinois Solid Waste Management Act. Provides that the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity shall work with nationally based consumer groups and trade associations to develop nationally recognized logos which may be used to indicate whether a container and any other consumer products which are claimed to be recyclable by a product manufacturer are recyclable, compostable, or biodegradable. Provides that the Department shall develop and conduct a public education and awareness campaign to encourage the public to look for and buy products in containers which are recyclable or compostable.

1    AN ACT concerning safety.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The Illinois Solid Waste Management Act is
5amended by changing Section 6a as follows:
 
6    (415 ILCS 20/6a)  (from Ch. 111 1/2, par. 7056a)
7    Sec. 6a. The Department of Commerce and Economic
8Opportunity shall:
9    (1) Work with nationally based consumer groups and trade
10associations to develop nationally recognized logos which may
11be used to indicate whether a container and any other consumer
12products which are claimed to be recyclable by a product
13manufacturer are is recyclable, compostable, or biodegradable
14made of recycled materials, or both.
15    (2) Work with nationally based consumer groups and trade
16associations to develop nationally recognized criteria for
17determining under what conditions the logos may be used.
18    (3) Develop and conduct a public education and awareness
19campaign to encourage the public to look for and buy products
20in containers which are recyclable or compostable made of
21recycled materials.
22    (4) Develop and prepare educational materials describing
23the benefits and methods of recycling for distribution to
