SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, It is highly fitting that honor and respect is
3paid to the truly great individuals who have served our
4country, and in doing so, have gone above and beyond the call
5of duty; and
 
6    WHEREAS, The heroic actions of Loren Duke Abdalla, a former
7Marine Raider during World War II, are currently being reviewed
8by President Barack Obama and Senator Richard Durbin for the
9highest honor from the United States for military service, the
10Medal of Honor; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Loren Abdalla's actions during World War II have
12gone unnoticed for over 65 years; he fought in the Pacific
13Theater in the battles of Peleliu and Okinawa; known as "The
14Indian", due to his Native American heritage with the Yankton
15Sioux Tribe from South Dakota, he was severely injured during
16the Battle at Peleliu; after recovering at a hospital on
17Guadalcanal, he rejoined his unit and fought in the Battle of
18Okinawa; and
 
19    WHEREAS, During the Battle of Okinawa, in the face of heavy
20enemy fire, Loren Abdalla bravely led his platoon to
21successfully achieve the objectives that they were tasked with;

1    WHEREAS, On April 22, 2009, Loren Abdalla was honored by
2the city council of Chicago and Mayor Richard M. Daley for his
3military service; a resolution was presented calling on
4President Obama and the U.S. Senate and House of
5Representatives to review his military service in the hopes
6that he will be properly honored; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Loren Abdalla's actions during the Battle of
8Okinawa advanced the United States war effort in the Pacific
9Theater and saved the lives of many of the soldiers around him
10who were able to return home to their families; therefore, be
11it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL
13ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that the heroic actions of
14Loren Duke Abdalla during World War II are recognized and that
15President Obama, Senator Durbin, Senator Kirk, and the other
16members of the Illinois Congressional Delegation are urged and
17encouraged to take the action necessary to ensure Loren Duke
18Abdalla is awarded the Medal of Honor; and be it further
 
19    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
20presented to Loren Abdalla, President Barack Obama, Senator
21Richard Durbin, Senator Mark Kirk, and the other members of the
22Illinois Congressional Delegation.
