SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, World War I officially ended when the Treaty of
3Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919; and
 
4    WHEREAS, The fighting in World War I ceased when an
5armistice went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh
6day of the eleventh month; therefore, November 11, 1918 is
7regarded as the end of World War I; and
 
8    WHEREAS, On May 13, 1938, Congress officially made November
911 a legal holiday to be dedicated to the cause of world peace
10and those who served in World War I; and
 
11    WHEREAS, After World War II, and upon the urging of veteran
12service agencies, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed
13legislation into law that henceforth named November 11 as
14Veterans Day, a day to celebrate all United States military
15veterans; and
 
16    WHEREAS, There are currently 764,203 Illinois veterans who
17have served our State and nation; and
 
18    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to
19acknowledge, support, and thank our veterans for their service;

1    WHEREAS, Employers are not currently required to provide
2time off for veterans on Veterans Day; therefore, be it
 
3    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL
4ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we urge employers
5throughout the State of Illinois to recognize the importance of
6Veterans Day and to allow our veterans the opportunity, if they
7so choose, to participate in Veterans Day ceremonies or to take
8time off as gratitude for their service.
