SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Donald E. Eckmann, who passed away on
4July 4, 2013; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Donald Eckmann was born in Chicago and raised in
6Riverside; he was a longtime resident of Downers Grove; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Donald Eckmann graduated from
8Riverside-Brookfield High School and earned his Bachelor of
9Arts in civil engineering from the University of Illinois at
10Urbana-Champaign in 1956; and
 
11    WHEREAS, After college, Donald Eckmann began working for
12Alvord, Burdick, and Howson in Chicago, where he soon became an
13expert in the practice of water and wastewater engineering and
14was named a partner in 1969; while at the firm, he was
15responsible for the design of waterworks facilities in
16Illinois, Michigan, Iowa, Wisconsin, Indiana, Virginia,
17Kentucky, and Monrovia, Liberia; and
 
18    WHEREAS, During his tenure at Alvord, Burdick, and Howson,
19Donald Eckmann served as the civil engineer responsible for
20overseeing the design of the Lake Michigan water supply system
21project, which helped lay the groundwork for more than 20

1DuPage County communities to receive Lake Michigan water from
2Chicago; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Donald Eckmann retired from Alvord, Burdick, and
4Howson in 2006; he continued as a part-time consultant at the
5firm following the firm's acquisition by the engineering firm
6of Donohue & Associates; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Donald Eckmann served as president of the Illinois
8Section and director of the national organization of the
9American Society of Civil Engineers; he also served as
10president of the Western Society of Engineers; and
 
11    WHEREAS, In 1989, Donald Eckmann was the recipient of the
12Distinguished Alumni Award from Illinois' Civil and
13Environmental Engineering Alumni Association; in 1992, he was
14named the Civil Engineer of the Year by the American Society of
15Civil Engineers for his work on the Lake Michigan water supply
16system project; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Donald Eckmann is survived by his wife of 56
18years, Arlene; his son, David; his daughters, Pam Kolzow and
19Lora Kmieciak; and his 8 grandchildren; therefore, be it
 
20    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL
21ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with his

1family and friends, mourn the passing of Donald E. Eckmann; and
2be it further
 
3    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
4presented to the family of Donald Eckmann as an expression of
5our sympathy.
