SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION

  
 
2    WHEREAS, Honoring our nation's and State's Vietnam 
3veterans is an appropriate measure, given their selfless acts 
4of courage in the face of adversity and uncertainty and their 
5willingness to serve their country when called upon; their 
6bravery and sacrifice should not be forgotten; and
  
 
7    WHEREAS, The Vietnam War lasted from 1964 to 1975, making 
8it the United States' second longest war; the war required the 
99.2 million Americans who served in the military throughout the 
10war's duration to perform at sustained tempos of intensity and 
11professionalism in all facets of military operations; and
  
 
12    WHEREAS, Nearly 2.7 million Americans served in Vietnam 
13throughout the war, facing countless challenges in an 
14unfamiliar environment where struggle was the norm; servicemen 
15and women were called upon to serve thousands of miles away 
16from home; and
  
 
17    WHEREAS, 58,286 American military personnel paid the 
18ultimate sacrifice by giving their lives for their country and 
19their fellow soldiers, marines, sailors, and airmen; and

  
 
20    WHEREAS, It is highly fitting that the Illinois General 
21Assembly pays honor and respect to those truly exceptional

1individuals who served our nation in Vietnam and, in doing so, 
2have gone above and beyond the call of duty by making 
3sacrifices so that their fellow Americans and Illinoisans could 
4live the lives promised by the United States Constitution; 
5therefore, be it
  
 
6    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL 
7ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES 
8CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate the portion of Interstate 
980 between Illinois Route 57 and Interstate 355 as the Vietnam 
10Veterans Memorial Parkway; and be it further
  
 
11    RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation 
12is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with 
13State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs 
14giving notice of the name of Vietnam Veterans Memorial Parkway; 
15and be it further
 
16    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
17delivered to the Secretary of the Illinois Department of 
18Transportation.
