HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, State Representative Monique D. Davis and the
3members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish to
4congratulate the staff and administration of Chicago State
5University for the establishment and ribbon-cutting of the
6Global Institute of Sustainable Development and for the
7inauguration of the Institute's Africa Center, microfinance
8initiative, and Global Africa Partnership Forum; and
 
9    WHEREAS, The Global Institute of Sustainable Development
10was established as an ambitious problem-solving innovation to
11further the university's global citizenship mission, with
12particular interest in utilizing sustainability principles to
13stimulate university/community partnerships for cross-cultural
14exchange; the Institute also utilizes faculty/student
15interaction outside the classroom in order to promote community
16engagement in research and service learning in the age of
17globalization; and
 
18    WHEREAS, In an intellectually-charged and research-driven
19setting, the Global Institute of Sustainable Development
20challenges students to achieve academic excellence and
21innovation, promotes international cooperation for sustainable
22development of humans and environments through global social
23justice, leadership, and entrepreneurship, and strives to

1produce informed and effective global citizens; and
 
2    WHEREAS, The Global Institute of Sustainable Development
3has established the Africa Center to enhance
4geographically-targeted and thematic research in Africa,
5stimulate professional development, highlight the contribution
6of Africans and the African diaspora to global development,
7inspire mutually beneficial cross-cultural exchange, and
8promote service learning; and
 
9    WHEREAS, The Microfinance Center, an initiative of the
10Global Institute of Sustainable Development supported by PNC
11Bank, aims to stimulate leadership skills, financial
12education, and entrepreneurship in a practical learning
13approach that breaks generational dependency while also
14alleviating poverty among Chicago State University students
15and surrounding communities; the program seeks to empower
16future leaders to take control of their economic conditions by
17starting actions that would reshape and transform their
18financial future and break the cycle of poverty for future
19generations; by building a solid financial future, prospective
20student entrepreneurs build self-confidence and become
21responsible economic citizens that change adversarial history
22to chart a successful course for their communities and the
23global society at large; and

1    WHEREAS, The timely inauguration of the "Global Africa
2Partnership Forum", with the theme "Building Global
3Partnership for African Leadership and Sustainable
4Development", represents a step in the right direction to
5further discussions to enhance capacity-building for United
6States-Africa partnerships; the forum seeks to address
7pertinent issues of how to leverage international resources for
8leadership and development in Africa and engages the
9University's internal and external stakeholders, including,
10but not limited to, faculty, students, entrepreneurs,
11corporations, faith-based and community organizations,
12policymakers, researchers, public intellectuals, and the
13general citizenry in a dynamic discourse and debate about the
14broad issues surrounding the role of university-community
15partnerships and the wider African diaspora can play in
16building strong leadership and sustainable development for
17Africa; the forum goes beyond talk to match resources to
18identified needs and expose African resources to potential
19foreign investors; therefore, be it
 
20    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
21NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
22we congratulate the staff and administration of Chicago State
23University for the establishment and ribbon-cutting of the
24Global Institute of Sustainable Development and for the
25inauguration of the Institute's Africa Center, microfinance

2continued success in the future; and be it further
 
3    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
4presented to the Global Institute of Sustainable Development as
