HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, On April 16, 2014, the Sewol, a ferry traveling
3from Incheon to Jeju island, Korea capsized and sank off the
4coast of Gwanmaedo Island; and
 
5    WHEREAS, The Sewol carried 476 passengers and crew, mostly
6students from Danwon High School in Ansan City on their trip to
7Jeju island; and
 
8    WHEREAS, At least 284 passengers have been confirmed dead
9and at least 20 remain unaccounted for; and
 
10    WHEREAS, With the cause of this horrific accident still
11undetermined, authorities are attempting to bring answers to
12grieving loved ones suffering the pain and devastation of
13losing a cherished member of their family or not yet knowing
14the fate of their missing loved one; and
 
15    WHEREAS, The people of the State of Illinois stand
16steadfast in their solidarity with the Korean American
17community saddened by this tragic accident and loss of precious
18lives; therefore, be it
 
19    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
20NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that

1we extend our sincerest and heartfelt condolences and sympathy
2to the families of the victims and the entire Korean community,
3especially those in Illinois; and be it further
 
4    RESOLVED, That we extend our support and best wishes for
5the survivors of this disaster as they work to recover from
6their injuries; and be it further
 
7    RESOLVED, That we applaud the teachers and crew members who
8sacrificed themselves to save the students at the final moment,
9thank the volunteers who rushed to the site to rescue the
10passengers, and thank the men and women of the Republic of
11Korea Navy, the United States Navy, and private organizations
12who assisted in rescue and recovery operations; and be it
13further
 
14    RESOLVED, That we encourage a thorough investigation in
15order to determine the cause, that future disasters might be
16averted; and be it further
 
17    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
18presented to the executive directors of Korean American Voter
19Organizing Initiative & Community Empowerment, James T. Hyun,
20Jonghwa Jung, the Mid-west Korean American Veterans
21Association, and the Institute for Peace Affair of the U.S.A.
