HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Clifton
4Lyme Skelcher of Marion, who passed away on May 2, 2014; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Clifton Skelcher was born in Cambria on November
626, 1922 to Jack and Vernell (nee Campbell) Skelcher; he
7married Berdella Simmons on December 29, 1945 in Murphysboro;
8and
 
9    WHEREAS, Clifton Skelcher served in the United States Navy
10during World War II; he earned 5 bronze stars, his fifth being
11for the invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944, which became a
12Silver Battle Star since it was in the first wave landing at
13Omaha Beach; before Normandy, he participated in every major
14invasion of Europe - North Africa, Sicily, 2 invasions of
15Italy, and southern France; later, in the Pacific Theatre of
16the War, he was in the invasion of the Philippines, liberating
17the islands from the Japanese occupation, and then he was in
18the invasion of Okinawa; he next prepared for the invasion of
19Japan, before the atomic bombs were dropped, ending the war
20with Japan in August of 1945; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Clifton Skelcher retired as the President of
22Laborer's International Union of North American Local 380 and

1was a member of Lantana Southern Baptist Church of Carbondale
2and VFW Post 2035 of Brownsville, Texas; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Clifton Skelcher was preceded in death by his
4parents; brother, Cline Skelcher; and sister, Annabelle
5Morris; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Clifton Skelcher is survived by his wife, Berdella
7Skelcher; 2 sons, Larry Skelcher and wife, Barbara, and Bradley
8Skelcher and wife, Dinah Lynn DeMoss; 2 grandsons, Jack
9Skelcher and wife, Lana, and Jason Skelcher; 4
10great-grandchildren, Caleb Skelcher, Colton Skelcher, Casey
11Skelcher, and Danielle Marie Skelcher; and 3 nephews, Clifton
12Skelcher and wife, Carol, Michael Skelcher and wife, Sharon,
13and Jack Morris and wife, Kathy; therefore, be it
 
14    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
15NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
16we mourn the passing of Clifton Lyme Skelcher, and extend our
17sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew
18and loved him; and be it further
 
19    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
20presented to the family of Clifton Skelcher as an expression of
21our deepest sympathy.
