HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are pleased to congratulate Dr. Marcia Young on
4the occasion of her retirement as superintendent for the David
5Davis Mansion State Historic Site; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Dr. Young has played a significant role in the
7enhancement of the quality of life for McLean County residents;
8as superintendent for David Davis Mansion State Historic Site,
9she has helped to bring the world to the mansion's doorstep for
1024 years; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Prior to joining the staff of the Illinois
12Historic Preservation Agency in 1990, Dr. Young served as the
13last director of the University Museums at Illinois State
14University in the late 1980s; during her tenure, she helped
15foster a new era in museum programming, marketing, and
16collections management; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Dr. Young helped oversee the restoration of Clover
18Lawn - known today as the David Davis Mansion, and has helped
19staff and volunteers survive and thrive, even during times of
20reduced funding; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Dr. Young has undertaken numerous collaborations

1with area schools, other museums, and various organizations to
2design outstanding programs that offer quality educational
3programs and entertaining views of history for all ages; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Dr. Young has encouraged and facilitated the
5development of numerous special programs and events designed to
6expand area tourism and support the fund-raising efforts of the
7non-profit David Davis Mansion Foundation; thousands of
8visitors have enjoyed such annual events as Christmas at the
9Mansions, the Bountiful Feast, Civil War Days, presentations by
10the Tea Ladies, and the Glorious Garden Walk; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Dr. Young's support of the efforts to reclaim and
12interpret Sarah's Garden on the grounds of the Davis Mansion
13has resulted in a lasting partnership with McLean County Master
14Gardeners and honors for the heirloom garden; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Dr. Young has helped local residents and visitors
16appreciate the important role Judge David Davis played in
17Abraham Lincoln's life and his rise to the presidency; under
18her leadership, the story of the Davis Mansion has also been
19greatly expanded to share stories about Sarah Davis and others
20who lived and worked in this remarkable Victorian-era home; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Dr. Young has been affiliated with the Looking for
22Lincoln Heritage Coalition for more than 10 years; she served

1as board chairman, and helped oversee the establishment of the
2Abraham Lincoln National Heritage Area; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Dr. Young is a past-President of the Illinois
4Association of Museums; she also served on the Abraham Lincoln
5Bicentennial Commission of McLean County and is a board member
6for the Heritage Association of McLean County; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Dr. Young is a respected educator and has taught
8courses and conducted workshops for students of all ages since
9she arrived in Bloomington in 1970; she has mentored countless
10interns from area universities, and generously assisted
11scholars, authors, and documentary filmmakers seeking
12information about the Davis family, Clover Lawn, and life in
13nineteenth-century America; and
 
14    WHEREAS, As Dr. Marcia Young retires from her long-time
15position with the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, she
16plans to continue her volunteer service with the Davis Mansion
17Foundation and several other related organizations; her
18knowledge and enthusiasm have been invaluable, her leadership
19has been steadfast, and countless people have benefited from
20her unwavering dedication; therefore, be it
 
21    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
22NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that

1we congratulate Dr. Marcia Young on her retirement as

3and we wish her the best in all her future endeavors; and be it
