HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are pleased to join the Illinois Council on
4Problem Gambling in promoting March of 2014 as National Problem
5Gambling Awareness Month; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Promoting National Problem Gambling Awareness
7Month provides individuals in the problem gambling community an
8opportunity to educate the public and policymakers about the
9social and financial effectiveness of services available for
10problem gambling; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Problem gambling is a public health issue
12affecting millions of Americans of all ages, races, and ethnic
13backgrounds in all communities and which has a significant
14societal and economic cost; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Problem gambling is treatable and treatment is
16effective in minimizing the harm to both individuals and
17society as a whole; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Numerous individuals, professionals, and
19organizations have dedicated their efforts to the education of
20the public about problem gambling and the availability and
21effectiveness of treatment; and

1    WHEREAS, The Illinois Council on Problem Gambling and the
2National Council on Problem Gambling invite all citizens of the
3State of Illinois to participate in National Problem Gambling
4Awareness Month; and
 
5    WHEREAS, The Illinois Council on Problem Gambling urges
6those with a gambling problem to reach out to their 24-hour
7confidential helpline at 1-800-426-2537 or 1-800-522-4700; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Both the Illinois General Assembly as an
9institution and the members of the General Assembly as
10individuals are in unique positions to help raise awareness of
11problem gambling and the impact it has on the individual, the
12family, and the community; therefore, be it
 
13    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
14NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
15we designate the month of March of 2014 as Problem Gambling
16Awareness Month in the State of Illinois; and be it further
 
17    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18presented to the Illinois Council on Problem Gambling.
