HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The city of Chicago continues to be afflicted with
3gun violence, and seniors at The Chicago High School for the
4Arts (ChiArts) created a temporary memorial on May 30, 2013,
5for all the Chicagoans who have lost their lives to gun
6violence since the beginning of the year; and
 
7    WHEREAS, The memorial came at a time when the culmination
8of the students' work on an economic project examining the
9causes of, and possible solutions to, the violence that plagues
10the city coincided with dozens of students being personally
11affected by the violence in Chicago; and
 
12    WHEREAS, The memorial was organized by senior Rachel Otero,
13who wanted to make a statement in support of her classmates who
14have lost friends and family to gun violence and to convey the
15message that they are not powerless and can use the arts to
16make a powerful emotional statement to address the violence;
17and
 
18    WHEREAS, The memorial included students tracing a chalk
19outline on the sidewalk in front of the ChiArts to represent
20each of the victims of gun violence; each victims's name was
21written into the outline and each name was read aloud during a
22candlelight vigil; and

1    WHEREAS, The memorial was inspired by Art=Ammo, an
2organization of artists against gun violence who are traveling
3to cities around the country in an attempt to get people to
4reflect on the effects of violence; therefore, be it
 
5    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
6NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
7we mourn the deaths of all Chicagoans who were victims of gun
8violence and recognize The Chicago High School for the Arts'
9memorial to the victims; and be it further
 
10    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
11presented to the students of ChiArts.
