HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate the congregation of St.
4Malachy Church and School on the occasion of the church's
5celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the Emancipation
6Proclamation; and
 
7    WHEREAS, The Emancipation Proclamation was issued by
8President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863; the Proclamation
9declared that those enslaved in Confederate territory were to
10be immediately freed; and
 
11    WHEREAS, St. Malachy Church and School is the oldest
12serving Black Catholic School on Chicago's West Side; the
13church, which was established in 1882, was home to the first
14black priest who served in Chicago, Roland Lambert, who was a
15pioneer in the teaching of black history; St. Malachy was also
16once home to Mother Teresa and her order, who lived at the
17church and worked in the community; and
 
18    WHEREAS, St. Malachy Church is an active participant in the
19Chicago community; the church administers programs for the
20homeless and the poor in the community and runs an afterschool
21program for the school and surrounding CPS Schools; the church
22also continues to educate and inform the community of the

1church's history; and
 
2    WHEREAS, St. Malachy Church was honored by former Cardinal
3John Bernardin of the Chicago Archdiocese for its work in the
4community with the poor; and
 
5    WHEREAS, The congregation of St. Malachy Church and School
6will celebrate this momentous occasion on June 29, 2013 at St.
7Malachy Church; therefore, be it
 
8    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
9NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
10we congratulate the congregation of St. Malachy Church and
11School on the occasion of the church's celebration of the 150th
12Anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation; and be it further
 
13    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
14presented to St. Malachy Church and School as a symbol of our
15esteem and respect.
