HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, It is highly fitting that the Illinois General
3Assembly pays honor and respect to individuals who gave their
4lives in the line of duty; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Illinois State Trooper Bernard Delano "Bernie"
6Skeeters's last watch occurred on May 20, 1982 when his patrol
7car was struck from behind by a tractor trailer on Interstate
855 near Williamsville; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Trooper Skeeters was working a safety detail
10patrolling on southbound I-55 behind a paint truck when a
11semi-trailer slammed into his squad car from behind forcing his
12car into the paint truck in front of him; the 3-vehicle
13accident instantly killed Trooper Skeeters; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Trooper Skeeters became an Illinois State Troper
15on March 9, 1970 and served for 12 years; he was assigned to
16District 9 in Springfield; he was the youngest of 15 children
17to Joseph Edward and Grace Rosalie (nee Whitcomb) Skeeters; he
18was survived by his wife, Marie, and their 3 sons, Tom, Ron,
19and the late Andy; therefore, be it
 
20    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
21NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE

1SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate the section of
2Interstate 55 near Williamsville from mile marker 107 ending at
3mile marker 109 as the "Trooper Bernard D. Skeeters Memorial
4Highway"; and be it further
 
5    RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation
6is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with
7State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs
8giving notice of the name "Trooper Bernard D. Skeeters Memorial
9Highway"; and be it further
 
10    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
11presented to the family of Trooper Skeeters and the Secretary
12of the Illinois Department of Transportation.
