SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Althea Przybylo Kroger, who passed away
4on August 30, 2012; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Althea Kroger was born in Chicago; her parents
6were Ted and Alice Przybylo; she attended St. Helen's Polish
7Catholic Grade School and Mt. St Mary High School; while at Mt.
8St. Mary, she played the piano and violin and performed in
9numerous orchestra concerts; she was also captain of the
10varsity basketball and volleyball teams and served as class
11officer and president of the Girls Athletic Association; and
 
12    WHEREAS, After high school, Althea Kroger attended St.
13Louis University, where she met the man of her dreams, Joe
14Kroger; after marrying in 1969, Joe and Althea moved to
15Toronto, where Althea became a mother to their loving son,
16Andrew; she subsequently earned her master's degree in
17political science from the University of Vermont, her law
18degree from Vermont Law School, and her Master of Public
19Administration Degree from the John F. Kennedy School of
20Government at Harvard University; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Althea Kroger was committed to social justice and
22was an activist in women's rights; despite strong opposition,

1she was elected and served in the Vermont House of
2Representatives for 4 terms; she subsequently served 2 terms in
3the Vermont Senate before becoming a family court judge; and
 
4    WHEREAS, After a year of rest following her colon cancer
5diagnosis in 1996, Althea Kroger traveled to Poland and fell in
6love with the country and its people; after studying for a year
7in Krakow, she received her certification to teach English as a
8second language; she then purchased and renovated a large
9building and opened the Althea Institute in Debica, which was
10founded to teach English and leadership skills to business
11managers and civic leaders; for the next 10 years, she worked
12relentlessly to better the lives of many people in Poland and
13the world at large; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Althea Kroger is survived by her husband, Joseph;
15her son, Andrew (Carolina); her granddaughters, Gabrielle and
16Rachel; and her siblings, Vivian (Paul) Kolpak and her
17children, Todd Alexis, and Vanessa; Andrew (Amy) Przybylo and
18his children, Adam and Kiki; Alice (Tony) Pawlicki and her
19children, Allison, Angie, and Stacie; Vicki (Bill) Pindras and
20her children, Andrea, David, Laura, Eric, and Emilie; and Ted
21(Alicja) and his children, Michelle, Alex, and Jack; she also
22had 14 first cousins; therefore, be it
 
23    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL

1ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
2her family and friends, the passing of Althea Przybylo Kroger;
3and be it further
 
4    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
5presented to the family of Althea Kroger as an expression of
6our sympathy.
