SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Joseph Denis Madigan Jr., who passed away
4on May 21, 2012; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Joseph Madigan Jr. was born in Chicago in 1932; he
6married Carol Ann Malloy in 1958; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Joseph Madigan Jr. was raised in Oak Park and
8attended Fenwick High School and the University of Notre Dame;
9after graduating from Notre Dame, he was commissioned as an
10officer in the United States Navy; while in the Navy, he was
11ordered to run retail operations, including a grocery exchange,
12on a large Navy base in New Jersey; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Madigans was established in Chicago in 1881 by
14Joseph Madigan Jr.'s paternal grandfather, Denis Joseph
15Madigan; during his career, Joseph Madigan Jr. led an expansion
16that took Madigans from its Madison and Crawford flagship to
17the establishment of stores across Chicagoland, including
18stores in Winston Plaza in Melrose Park, Yorktown Shopping
19Center in Lombard, Woodfield Mall, Harlem Irving Plaza, and the
20North Riverside Park and Chicago Ridge Malls, among many
21others; and

1    WHEREAS, Joseph Madigan Jr. was well known as a highly
2creative and energetic merchant who foresaw and led a trend
3towards fashionable, price-conscious clothing that has become
4the norm in American retailing; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Joseph Madigan Jr. was preceded in death by his
6parents, Joseph D. Madigan and Florence Walsh Madigan, and his
7sister, Elizabeth Ann "Bette" Morris; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Joseph Madigan Jr. is survived by his loving wife
9of 53 years, Carol; his children and their families, Joseph and
10his wife, Eileen and their children, Mary Carol, Joseph,
11Michael, and Kathryn; John and his wife, Jennifer and their
12children, John, Therese, Daniel, Genevieve, Helen, Christine,
13and Michael Joseph; and Maria and her husband, Patrick Kelly,
14and their children, Patrick Emmett and Caroline Rose; and his
15sister, Nancy Schlacks; therefore, be it
 
16    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL
17ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
18his family and friends, the passing of Joseph Denis Madigan
19Jr.; and be it further
 
20    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
21presented to the family of Joseph Madigan Jr. as an expression
22of our sympathy.
