SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Jane Shugg Elkins of Hinsdale, who passed
4away on April 27, 2012; and
 
5    WHEREAS, She was born in 1919 in Huntington, West Virginia;
6she received her undergraduate degree from Wellesley College
7Class of 1940; and
 
8    WHEREAS, In her pursuits, she often stepped outside
9boundaries and discovered herself to be the first person to do
10so; when Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service, or
11W.A.V.E.S., was established in 1942, she immediately enlisted
12and was the first commissioned officer from Michigan during
13World War II; when she entered Northwestern Law School, she was
14one of 4 women in the first class of returning veterans; when
15she became interested in antique cars and purchased a Model A
16Ford, she had to get special permission from the superintendent
17of schools to enroll in an all men's course on 4-cylinder
18engines; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Her vision of life was more than could be filled
20in one activity, one vocation or a single life; her interests
21and ventures were boundless; she wore many hats with flair and
22grace during her lifetime, as a mother, attorney, entrepreneur,

1Hinsdale village trustee, and as a member of the League of
2Women Voters, Embroiders Guild, Lyric Opera, Chicago Symphony,
3and Music of the Baroque; she enjoyed traveling, art class,
4breeding springer spaniels, cats, antique cars, bridge, book
5groups, botany, and making beads; and
 
6    WHEREAS, She was one of the first women to serve on the
7Board of Trustees at Union Church; she has also served on the
8committees to search for Union Church's last 3 pastors,
9minister of music, and the Illinois Conference Minister; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Jane Shugg Elkins was the beloved wife of the late
11Robert Hiatt Elkins Sr. for 52 years; she was the loving mother
12of 5 children, Margaret Templet-Drummond, Elizabeth Louise
13Elkins, Catherine Killgore Elkins, Robert Hiatt Elkins Jr., and
14Susan Elkins Kneisel; and a proud grandmother of 5
15grandchildren, Melissa Ann Templet, Megan Elizabeth Templet,
16Lauren Elizabeth Kneisel, Andrew Killgore Kneisel, and
17Alexander Hiatt Kneisel; therefore, be it
 
18    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL
19ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
20her family and friends, the passing of Jane Shugg Elkins; and
21be it further
 
22    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
