SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Marjorie Ruth Gieser of Wheaton, who
4passed away on August 12, 2011; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Marjorie Ruth Nystrom was born May 14, 1938 in
6Asyut, Egypt; her parents, Dr. Sigurd Nystrom and Dr. Harriet
7Skemp, were medical missionaries to Ethiopia; she graduated
8from Wheaton College, where she met her husband Richard G.
9Gieser; and
 
10    WHEREAS, In 1976, Mrs. Gieser received her Masters of Fine
11Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago; an artist
12of various media, she found her calling in the creation of art
13used to augment worship in churches; Mrs. Gieser produced
14banners, pulpit cloths, and vestments of dramatic beauty; and
 
15    WHEREAS, She typically created three-dimensional pieces,
16combining painting with sculptured fabric; churches throughout
17the Chicago region and numerous churches around the world use
18her work, including the Fourth Presbyterian Church of Chicago,
19Moody Church, Edman Chapel of Wheaton College, and in church
20sanctuaries in several states; international locations include
21Coventry Cathedral of England, St. George Church of Bagdad,
22Iraq, and Khartoum Evangelical Church of Sudan; and

1    WHEREAS, While accompanying her ophthalmologist husband on
2frequent medical mission trips, Mrs. Gieser found ways to
3brighten hospital wards by painting colorful murals in Schell
4Eye Hospital of Vellore, India; Dutch Hospital of El Alto,
5Boliva; and Eye Hospital of Ulan Bator, Mongolia; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Mrs. Gieser is survived by her husband of 51
7years; their son, Dr. Stephen Gieser; their daughters, Wendy
8Partain and Susan Cassel; her sister, Nardos Shuler; and 12
9grandchildren; therefore, be it
 
10    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL
11ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
12her family and friends, the passing of Marjorie Ruth Gieser;
13and be it further
 
14    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
15presented to the family of Marjorie Ruth Gieser as a symbol of
16our sincere sympathy.
