SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Michael O'Connell of Tinley Park; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Michael O'Connell was a graduate of the FBI
5National Academy and Northwestern University School of Police
6Staff and Command; he also held a master's degree in criminal
7justice from Lewis University; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Michael O'Connell had a long and distinguished
9career in law enforcement; he began his career in 1972 as a
10patrol officer with the Riverdale Police Department, and he
11served as police chief of the Riverdale Police Department for
12six years; in 1995, he was appointed to serve as police chief
13of the Village of Tinley Park, where he served until his
14passing; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Michael O'Connell taught criminal justice courses
16at South Suburban College for several years; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Michael O'Connell was active on numerous Illinois
18Association of Chiefs of Police committees, including those
19that focus on domestic terrorism and homeland security; he also
20served on the Executive Board of the South Suburban Association
21of Chiefs of Police; and

1    WHEREAS, Michael O'Connell was widely respected and
2influential throughout the Illinois law enforcement community;
3he was the recipient of the 2005 "Police Chief of the Year"
4award from the Illinois State Crime Commission for his work;
5and
 
6    WHEREAS, Michael O'Connell is survived by his wife, Barb;
7his daughter, Colleen; his son, Michael, and his
8daughter-in-law, Liz; his daughter, Michelle (Anichini), and
9his son-in-law, Paul; and his four grandchildren; therefore, be
10it
 
11    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL
12ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
13his family and friends, the passing of Michael O'Connell; and
14be it further
 
15    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16presented to the family of Michael O'Connell as an expression
17of our sympathy.
