SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Children's interstitial lung disease includes a
3group of rare life-threatening lung diseases in children that
4may lead to progressive, incurable lung scarring or life-long
5lung problems; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Certain children's interstitial lung diseases can
7progress quickly, often causing disability or death within
8first two years of life; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Children's interstitial lung diseases are one of
10the leading causes of lung transplantation in children, due to
11scarring and an irreversible loss of the lung tissue's ability
12to transport oxygen; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Children's interstitial lung disease is not the
14same as adult interstitial lung disease; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Children's interstitial lung diseases are caused
16by poorly understood genetic abnormalities that affect
17families, infection, bleeding in the lungs, autoimmune
18diseases, or abnormal lung development; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Children's interstitial lung diseases are often
20mis-diagnosed or under-diagnosed; and

1    WHEREAS, There is no proven cure or treatment for
2children's interstitial lung diseases; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Limited funding is available for these rare lung
4problems in children; and
 
5    WHEREAS, A need has been identified to increase research
6funding, awareness, and detection of these mis-diagnosed and
7under-diagnosed disorders, as well as all incarnations of
8children's interstitial lung disease; therefore, be it
 
9    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL
10ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we recognize the need
11to pursue research into the causes, a treatment, and an
12eventual cure for children's interstitial lung disease; and be
13it further
 
14    RESOLVED, That we support the work of advocates and
15organizations in educating, supporting, and providing hope for
16individuals who suffer from children's interstitial lung
17disease; and be it further
 
18    RESOLVED, That we congratulate advocates and organizations
19for their efforts to educate the public about children's
20interstitial lung disease, while funding research to help find

1a cure for this disorder; and be it further
 
2    RESOLVED, That we designate the first week of May as
3Children's Interstitial Lung Disease Awareness Week in the
4State of Illinois.
