SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Mary Ruth Applegate of Downers Grove, who
4passed away on December 28, 2010; and
 
5    WHEREAS, She was born in Decatur, the daughter of Arthur T.
6and Ethel Day; in 1948, she married George B. Applegate and
7moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, where she lived for the next 40
8years; and
 
9    WHEREAS, She was a devoted wife and wonderful mother to her
10two children; as they grew older, she returned to work as a
11secretary for the United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and
12Firearms, and later attained the position of tax examiner; and
 
13    WHEREAS, After the death of her husband and her retirement,
14she moved to Downers Grove, where she lived for the last 18
15years; throughout her life, she had a love of books and
16learning; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Unable to attend college as a young woman, as a
18retiree she attended classes at the College of DuPage,
19accumulating several years of college credit in English; she
20also served as an officer of the AARP and volunteered at Little
21Friends; she was an independent, progressive woman who cared

1about children and animals and believed in equality and justice
2for all; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Mary Ruth Applegate is survived by her daughter,
4Linda McGovern; her son, George T. Applegate; as well as her
5sons-in-law, Terrance McGovern and Robert Bracken; therefore,
6be it
 
7    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL
8ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
9her family and friends, the passing of Mary Ruth Applegate; and
10be it further
 
11    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
12presented to the family of Mary Ruth Applegate as a symbol of
13our sincere sympathy.
