SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, It is necessary to recognize citizens who are
3dedicated to the betterment of the community; and
 
4    WHEREAS, The best means of fostering commitment to our
5community is by recognizing the contributions of the citizens
6who have come before us; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Mariano Turano came to America from Calabria,
8Italy in pursuit of his dream to provide a better life for his
9family; in 1962, he founded the Turano Baking Company; despite
10being only 1,000 square feet in size, this small bakery made a
11big impression among his neighbors, thanks to Mariano's
12authentic Italian recipes; and
 
13    WHEREAS, The Campagna-Turano Bakery started as a local
14bakery with home-delivery routes; as word of mouth traveled and
15his Italian bakery grew, Mariano, his brother Eugenio, and
16their families expanded the product line to include new items,
17such as French and Vienna breads, Kaiser rolls, and Mamma Susi
18Pizzas; by the early 1970s, Campagna-Turano Bakery, now known
19as Turano Baking Company, decided to take on the wholesale
20market, introducing Mamma Susi's Pizza to local grocery stores;
21it didn't take long for Turano to find themselves on restaurant
22tabletops and grocery stores throughout Chicagoland; and

1    WHEREAS, Mariano Turano's sons, Renato, Umberto, and
2Giancarlo, have made it their mission to carry on the tradition
3of excellence, creativity, and reliability that their father
4started 50 years ago; they manage the business with the help of
5devoted employees and Mariano's grandchildren, and have turned
6Turano Baking Company into what is now the nation's leading
7European artisan bakery; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Today, the third generation of the Turano family
9eagerly contributes to the company's success with the same
10passion, determination, and enthusiasm of their fathers, while
11still maintaining the tradition of quality and artisanship
12their grandfather started half a century ago; in addition to
13delivering fresh bread daily throughout the Midwest, Turano
14also services the entire nation with frozen, par-baked, and
15fully-baked breads; Turano Baking Company's product line now
16consists of over 400 quality breads and baked goods, and the
17company continues to grow, with operations in Illinois,
18Georgia, and Florida; and
 
19    WHEREAS, The members of this body are excited to celebrate
20Turano's 50th anniversary in 2012, and look forward to their
21bright future; and
 
22    WHEREAS, There is a section of State highway located on

1Roosevelt Road, between Ridgeland and East Avenues in the City
2of Berwyn; therefore, be it
 
3    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL
4ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
5CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate the south side of
6Roosevelt Road between Ridgeland and East Avenues in the City
7of Berwyn as "Mariano Turano Way"; and be it further
 
8    RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation
9is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with
10State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs
11giving notice of the name; and be it further
 
12    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
13presented to the Turano family, the City of Berwyn, Berwyn
14Mayor Robert Lovero, Illinois State Senator Martin A. Sandoval,
15and the Secretary of the Illinois Department of Transportation.
