SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
10 ILCS 5/7-10.4 new
10 ILCS 5/8-8.2 new
10 ILCS 5/10-5.2 new

    Amends the Election Code. Provides that, along with each petition for nomination, either (i) a certified copy of the candidate's birth certificate or (ii) any other reliable proof of the candidate's citizenship shall be filed with the appropriate election authority. Provides that the appropriate election authority may allow a member of the public to visually inspect the copy of the birth certificate or other proof of citizenship at the office of the local election authority but may not release a copy of the birth certificate or other proof of citizenship for duplication, transmission, or any other purpose. Permits the candidate to redact from the birth certificate or other proof of citizenship the maiden name of the candidate's mother and any social security numbers included on the document.

1    AN ACT concerning elections.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 10. The Election Code is amended by adding Sections
57-10.4, 8-8.2, and 10-5.2 as follows:
 
6    (10 ILCS 5/7-10.4 new)
7    Sec. 7-10.4. Petition for nomination; birth certificate.
8Along with each petition for nomination, either (i) a certified
9copy of the candidate's birth certificate or (ii) any other
10reliable proof of the candidate's citizenship shall be filed
11with the appropriate election authority in accordance with
12Section 7-12. The appropriate election authority may allow a
13member of the public to visually inspect the copy of the birth
14certificate or other proof of citizenship at the office of the
15local election authority, but the appropriate election
16authority may not release a copy of the birth certificate or
17other proof of citizenship for duplication, transmission, or
18any other purpose. The candidate may redact from the birth
19certificate or other proof of citizenship the maiden name of
20the candidate's mother and any social security numbers included
21on the document.
