| 1 | | AN ACT concerning education.

| 2 | | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
|
| 3 | | represented in the General Assembly:
|
| 4 | | Section 5. The University Religious Observances Act is |
| 5 | | amended by adding Section 1.5 as follows:
|
| 6 | | (110 ILCS 110/1.5 new) |
| 7 | | Sec. 1.5. Absence of student due to religious beliefs. |
| 8 | | (a) In this Section, "institution of higher learning" has |
| 9 | | the meaning ascribed to that term in the Higher Education |
| 10 | | Student Assistance Act. |
| 11 | | (b) Any student in an institution of higher learning, other |
| 12 | | than a religious or denominational institution of higher |
| 13 | | learning, who is unable, because of his or her religious |
| 14 | | beliefs, to attend classes or to participate in any |
| 15 | | examination, study, or work requirement on a particular day |
| 16 | | shall be excused from any such examination, study, or work |
| 17 | | requirement and shall be provided with an opportunity to make |
| 18 | | up the examination, study, or work requirement that he or she |
| 19 | | may have missed because of such absence on a particular day; |
| 20 | | provided that the make-up examination, study, or work does not |
| 21 | | create an unreasonable burden upon the institution. No fees of |
| 22 | | any kind shall be charged by the institution for making |
| 23 | | available to the student such an opportunity. No adverse or |
