SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
105 ILCS 305/2  from Ch. 122, par. 1503-2

    Amends the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy Law. Provides that the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy Law shall develop an additional residential campus in a county with a population less then 400,000. Effective immediately.

1    AN ACT concerning education.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy Law
5is amended by changing Section 2 as follows:
 
6    (105 ILCS 305/2)  (from Ch. 122, par. 1503-2)
7    Sec. 2. Establishment, Funding and Location. There is
8hereby created the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy,
9which shall be a residential institution located in the Fox
10River Valley in close proximity to the national science
11laboratories based in Illinois. The Academy may develop
12additional campuses throughout the State, however, any
13additional campus does not need to serve as a residential
14institution. The Academy shall develop an additional
15residential campus in a county with a population less then
16400,000. The Academy shall be a State agency, funded by State
17appropriations, private contributions and endowments. Minimal
18fees for residential students may be charged. The Academy may
19admit those students who have completed the academic equivalent
20of the 9th grade and may offer a program of secondary and
21postsecondary course work. Admission shall be determined by
22competitive examination.
23    In order to be eligible for State appropriations, the

1Academy shall submit to the Board of Higher Education not later
2than the 1st day of October of each year its budget proposal
3for the operation and capital needs of the Academy for its next
4fiscal year.
