HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are pleased to congratulate Edna Mae Smith on
4the occasion of her 100th birthday on September 27, 2012; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Edna Mae Smith was born on September 27, 1912, in
6Hope, Arkansas; her parents are Elvesta and Jolly Johnson; she
7married Claude Smith in 1931; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Edna Mae Smith was raised on Dewitt Plantation;
9since the age of 11, she was employed as a day work, making
10roughly $5 a day; she continued in that line of employment,
11working in various homes in Lake Forest, Highland Park and
12Waukegan until she fell ill; and
 
13    WHEREAS, On March 25, 1947, Edna Mae Smith and her husband
14moved to Waukegan to join her sibling, Myrtle Wilkins, who
15attended Shiloh Baptist Church; Edna Mae and Claude both joined
16the church 4 days later; she subsequently became an usher, and
17later a Deaconess, at the church; she has also attended many
18National Conventions throughout the United States and held
19various other positions with the church, including 2nd
20Vice-President and President of the Shiloh Usher Board; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Edna Mae Smith was once part of a 5-member

1religious singing group; the group performed at various
2churches in Hope and Stuttgart, Arkansas; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Edna Mae Smith serves as a model of hard work,
4integrity, and dedication for the people of the State of
5Illinois; therefore, be it
 
6    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
7NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
8we congratulate Edna Mae Smith on the occasion of her 100th
9birthday and wish her many happy and healthy years to come; and
10be it further
 
11    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
12presented to Edna Mae Smith as a symbol of our esteem and
13respect.
