HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are pleased to congratulate Phil Humber of the
4Chicago White Sox for pitching a perfect game against the
5Seattle Mariners on April 21, 2012; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Phil Humber became only the 21st pitcher in Major
7League Baseball history to throw a perfect game and the third
8member in White Sox history to pitch a perfect game, joining
9Mark Buehrle against Tampa Bay on July 23, 2009 and Charles
10Robertson against Detroit on April 30, 1922; and
 
11    WHEREAS, The Chicago White Sox are now tied with the New
12York Yankees with the most number of perfect games in team
13history, with 3 perfect games; and
 
14    WHEREAS, By pitching a perfect game, Phil Humber joins an
15elite class of pitchers that spans the ages and includes some
16all-time baseball greats, including John Richmond of the
17Worcester Brown Stockings, John Ward of the Providence Giants,
18Cy Young of the Boston Pilgrims, Addie Joss of the Cleveland
19Indians, Charlie Robertson of the Chicago White Sox, Don Larsen
20of the New York Yankees, Jim Bunning of the Philadelphia
21Phillies, Sandy Koufax of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Catfish
22Hunter of the Oakland Athletics, Len Barker of the Cleveland

1Indians, Mike Witt of the California Angels, Tom Browning of
2the Cincinnati Reds, Dennis Martinez of the Montreal Expos,
3Kenny Rogers of the Texas Rangers, David Wells of the New York
4Yankees, David Cone of the New York Yankees, Randy Johnson of
5the Arizona Diamondbacks; Mark Buehrle of the Chicago White
6Sox, Dallas Braden of the Oakland Athletics, and Roy Halladay
7of the Philadelphia Phillies; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Phil Humber threw his perfect game in only his
930th Major League start; on route to his perfect game, Humber
10retired 27 straight Seattle Mariners, using just 97 pitches
11while striking out 9; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Phil Humber's game was Major League Baseball's
13first no-hitter of 2012 and the 3rd in history against Seattle;
14and
 
15    WHEREAS, Phil Humber was named the American League Player
16of the Week for the week ending April 22, 2012; he went 1-0
17with a 0.63 ERA in 14 1/3 innings, while striking out 16 over 2
18starts that week, including the perfect game; therefore, be it
 
19    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
20NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
21we congratulate Phil Humber of the Chicago White Sox on his
22perfect game against the Seattle Mariners and wish him
