HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, In recognition of Women's History Month in the
3State of Illinois, the members of the Illinois House of
4Representatives are pleased to recognize State Senator Iris
5Martinez as the first Latina Illinois State Senator; and
 
6    WHEREAS, In 2003, Senator Martinez was the first Latina
7woman to be elected to the Illinois State Senate; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Senator Martinez has been particularly concerned
9with issues concerning women's health; in her first year in
10Springfield, she ensured that community agencies like the
11Children's Place, an agency that works with children and
12families affected by HIV and AIDS, and Concordia Avondale
13Community Center, which provides daycare, after-school
14programs, and a center for seniors, received State funding to
15continue their programming; and
 
16    WHEREAS, To help protect consumers from becoming victims of
17identity theft, Senator Martinez helped pass a law that
18requires all insurance cards be issued without a Social
19Security number; and
 
20    WHEREAS, In 2004, Senator Martinez was awarded the Hillary
21Rodham Clinton Leadership Award, an award presented to an

1elected official by the Illinois Democratic Women's
2organization; therefore, be it
 
3    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
4NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
5we recognize State Senator Iris Martinez on being elected the
6first Latina Illinois State Senator; and be it further
 
7    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
8presented to State Senator Iris Martinez as a symbol of our
9respect and esteem.
