HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The Illinois House of Representatives is pleased
3to congratulate the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy's
4students, staff, faculty, and alumni on the 25th anniversary of
5the Academy; and
 
6    WHEREAS, The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy's
7distinctive contributions to the State of Illinois, the nation,
8and the world in the fields of science, technology, engineering
9and mathematics (STEM), education and other fields are
10deserving of recognition as well; and
 
11    WHEREAS, The Academy is a State, national and global leader
12in diverse STEM talent development, student inquiry and
13research, student achievement, professional development for
14educators, and the design of innovative teaching and learning
15environments and practices; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Academy programs and services for students,
17teachers, and other educators are delivered at its campus in
18Aurora, through its field offices in Chicago, Metro East, and
19Rock Island, at various other sites throughout Illinois, and
20on-line; and
 
21    WHEREAS, In 2011-2012, the Academy is celebrating its 25th

1Anniversary year and a distinguished quarter of a century of
2inspiring, challenging, and nurturing students who are
3talented in mathematics and science to realize their
4extraordinary potential, live ethical and exemplary lives of
5service, and advance the human condition; and
 
6    WHEREAS, In the past 25 years, the Academy, inspired by Dr.
7Leon Lederman, the recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physics in
81988, has graduated nearly 5,000 students, served thousands of
9Illinois teachers and students in its statewide outreach
10programs, attracted considerable private sector support, and
11brought positive national and global recognition to the State
12of Illinois; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Recent examples of the Academy and it's
14recognition include: the Academy was named the nationwide
15winner of the Intel Star Innovator Award; its student teams
16received the highest ranking possible in the annual
17international High School Mathematical Contest in Modeling;
18and the Academy and several State agencies collaborated to
19develop and facilitate the Illinois Innovation Talent Program
20which fosters partnerships between industry and Illinois high
21schools; and
 
22    WHEREAS, The Academy will continue to develop diverse STEM
23talent, student and alumni researchers, entrepreneurs,

1engineers, physicians, technologists, and leaders in all
2fields who will tackle challenges such as developing
3sustainable energy, discovering cures and treatments for
4dreaded human ailments, inventing new products and services
5that change the way people live, learn, and work, and who will
6help our State and nation compete and collaborate effectively
7in the global arena; and
 
8    WHEREAS, The Academy also will continue to be a catalyst
9and laboratory for the advancement of teaching and stimulating
10excellence for all Illinois schools in mathematics and science;
11therefore, be it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
13NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
14we congratulate Dr. Leon Lederman, the Academy's current and
15past Presidents, Dr. Glenn W. "Max" McGee and Dr. Stephanie
16Pace Marshall, respectively, and all trustees, staff, faculty,
17students, alumni, parents, and partners of the Illinois
18Mathematics and Science Academy for 25 years of success,
19leadership, and innovation; and be it further
 
20    RESOLVED, That we wish the Academy well in all its future
21endeavors to ignite and nurture creative, ethical scientific
22minds that will advance the human condition; and be it further

1    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
2presented to Dr. Glenn McGee and the Illinois Mathematics and
3Science Academy as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
