HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, It is somewhat uncommon for an Illinois resident
3to be the subject of 2 congratulatory resolutions enacted by
4the Illinois House of Representatives; and
 
5    WHEREAS, A previous resolution, passed by the House,
6saluted the conclusion of Charles Wheeler III's excellent
7career in journalism and expressed warm wishes for a good start
8in an academic career; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Another milestone has brought on a public clamor
10for a second resolution to reprise Charles Wheeler III's life's
11work and extend him best wishes on his 70th birthday; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Charles Wheeler III's life's work was highlighted
13by such feats as doing play-by-play of all 154 Milwaukee Braves
14games in 1954 for siblings and friends, using little more than
15a fertile imagination and an All-Star baseball spinner board;
16and
 
17    WHEREAS, Charles Wheeler III graduated from St. Mary's
18College and the Medill School of Journalism and labored for 3
19years with the Peace Corps in Panama before stepping into the
20footprints left by 2 respected newspaper men, his father and
21grandfather; and

1    WHEREAS, After 24 years of awarding winning coverage of
2Illinois government and politics, skillful leadership of the
3Illinois Legislative Correspondents Association, and crafty
4guidance of the dearly departed ILCA Gridiron Show, Charles
5Wheeler III set his sights on higher education; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Over the last 18 years, Charles Wheeler III has
7led the University of Illinois Public Affairs Reporting
8Program, which has graduated 500 master's students, and has
9continued to report and write a monthly column for Illinois
10Issues Magazine, which has earned him 4 national Capitolbeat
11Awards; these cumulative distinctions also convinced the
12Illinois AP Editors to induct him into the Lincoln League of
13Journalists; therefore, be it
 
14    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
15NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
16we salute Charles N. Wheeler III for a distinguished career,
17extend our best wishes for a festive birthday celebration at
18the Governor's Mansion, and declare that, due to his efforts,
19the State of Illinois is a better place; and be it further
 
20    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
21presented to Charles Wheeler III as a symbol of our esteem and
22respect.
