HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, St. John's Hospital School of Nursing, the first
3Catholic school of nursing in the United States, was
4established on October 4, 1886 in Springfield for the members
5of the Hospital Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Their mission was to care for the sick and the
7needy of the community in a spirit of joy, respect, and
8commitment to competence; and
 
9    WHEREAS, From that day until the present, the values and
10vision of the Hospital Sisters have underscored and directed
11the efforts of the faculty and students; and
 
12    WHEREAS, In 1912, the school accepted the first laywoman
13and voluntarily sought approval from the Illinois Department of
14Registration and Education; and
 
15    WHEREAS, In 1952, when the National League for Nursing
16first began its accreditation program for schools of nursing,
17St. John's was among those who came forward to meet this new
18challenge; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Today, St. John's College students earn a Bachelor
20of Science Degree in Nursing; and

1    WHEREAS, St. John's College has a vision to educate nurses
2and health care professionals for innovative practice
3excellence and values-based leadership; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Over 3,327 nursing students have been educated at
5St. John's since the establishment of the school; therefore, be
6it
 
7    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
8NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
9we proclaim October 4, 2011 as "St. John's College Day" in the
10State of Illinois and congratulate the College on their 125th
11anniversary; and be it further
 
12    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
13presented to St. John's Hospital School of Nursing as a symbol
14of our respect and esteem.
